New Town, Edinburgh

New Town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. New Town is not all that new, in fact in was built between 1765-1850. Originally built to help with the overcrowding in Old Town in the 1700’s, the area known as New Town became the more wealthy part of Edinburgh, while Old Town tended to keep the less well to do. Later, Old Town and New Town became less separate, and the whole town of Edinburgh began to thrive. Many galleries and most of Edinburgh’s main shopping areas are found in New Town.
